Worldwide attention has the bears living the good life! The Saving Wildlife with LOVE campaign was a wonderful success and Kodi and Yak will benefit.
In just two weeks, and with a simple advertisement in our newsletter and on Facebook, we were able to raise $12,000. This money covers the bears’ diet for the entire year with enough left over to provide for some habitat improvements and enrichment. We are so grateful for the extra support during a slow time of year for visitation.
We held a special Valentine’s Day salmon feast for both Kodi & Yak. Despite our beautiful presentation, both bears decided they would prefer to eat in private. Each time they came to grab a salmon they meandered back to a semi-private area and chowed down. While humans may not want to be caught on camera with fish guts all over the faces… bears do this for another reason. In the wild, bears will often bring salmon caught during a salmon run off into the nearby brush to reduce the chance of it getting stolen by a competing bear. Yak and Kodi live in separate habitats so they don’t have to worry about that, but they still instinctually protect their catch.
