It’s an important day in the world of animal advocacy. November 15 is #SteveIrwinDay! Steve Irwin spent his life dedicated to protecting wildlife and inspiring and educating other people about the animals he loved so much. Steve’s passion and infectiously optimistic attitude earned him an instant following. Earning the name “The Crocodile Hunter,” Steve set out on adventures and invited millions round the world with him as he found new, wild friends.
One of those adventures brought him to Wildlife Images. Many years before a filming for “The Crocodile Hunter,” a bond was formed between the Irwins and Wildlife Images. Steve’s wife, Terri, entrusted Malina, her beloved cougar, to our care when she moved to Australia to marry Steve. Years later, the couple returned for a special episode of “The Crocodile Hunter.”
A special memory from Dave Siddon, Jr., Executive Director, Wildlife Images:
I was lucky enough to get to know Steve Irwin while he and Terri were here at Wildlife Images filming a couple of episodes of “The Crocodile Hunter.” Our paths crossed several times over the years and we became friends, I really enjoyed working with him. He had that infectious enthusiasm and passion for what he believed in that was genuine and not just something he did for the camera. His bigger than life personality made it difficult for anyone to follow; however Terri, Bindi, and Robert have done a remarkable job. They have not only continued his work they have brought it to a new level that Steve would be so proud of. The Irwins will always be very close to my heart and I am so glad they are giving so many people hope for the future of wildlife.
That unique friendship between the Irwins and Wildlife Images continues. The Irwins have visited Wildlife Images several times. In 2016, Terri, Bindi and Robert held a fundraiser at Critter Creek on behalf of Wildlife Images. They have contributed to several other events, including donations of Robert’s photography. Wildlife Images’ executive director and board members have joined the Irwins at various functions and fundraisers including the Steve Irwin Gala in Los Angeles and the unveiling of Steve’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Following in Steve’s footsteps the family recently debuted a new show on Animal Planet called “Crikey: It’s the Irwins.”
Steve Irwins life was extraordinary and his impact lives on through his wife Terri, daughter Bindi, son Robert, and their fellow Wildlife Warriors. So, today, on #SteveIrwinDay, we tip our hats and give a big ole’ “Crikey” to a man whose powerful legacy continues!
